AAAS Fellow Tiffany Lightbourn accepted into inaugural DHS Fellows Leadership Program

Tiffany Lightbourn, AAAS Fellow, is one of 25 candidates selected from over 260 applicants for the inaugural DHS Fellows Program, a Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Center of Excellence for Government. The Fellowship is designed to groom a cadre of “home-grown” DHS professionals for increased levels of responsibility across the Department.

A component of the Program is DHS Fellows' benchmarking of several private, public and non-profit organizations. During these site visits, Fellows interact with senior and mid-level leaders, learn from their successes and failures, and cull the lessons to apply to their challenges.

DHS AAAS Scholar Yisroel Brumer featured in Newsweek magazine

Yisroel Brumer is a featured columnist in the Oct. 23 issue of Newsweek magazine ("Let's Not Crowd Me, I'm Only a Scientist"). He describes positive reactions to his DHS-related work as an applied scientist versus the nation's apparent disinterest in scientific discovery and research scientists as popular figures. Orientation for new and returning students

Science and Technology will host its annual DHS Scholars and Fellows Orientation Meeting, Nov. 4-6, to welcome the Class of 2006. The Orientation gives students an opportunity to meet DHS leaders and scientific personnel, learn about the DHS mission and current initiatives, and participate in a research internship fair. It is an opportunity to provide evidence that science and engineering are playing an important role in security. Students will participate in a research internship fair with DHS, DHS and National Labs, and DHS Research and Education Centers on Nov. 4, from 6pm to 8pm, at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill (www.washingtonregency.hyatt.com).  Approximately 200 students will be attending this year’s Orientation Meeting. Under Secretary Cohen will be the featured keynote speaker on Monday, November 6th, the final day of the Orientation. Closed to the Press.

Jay Cohen announced as DHS Under Secretary for Science & Technology

Retired Rear Admiral Jay M. Cohen was sworn in on August 10 as the new DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology. Under Secretary Cohen brings to the Department vast scientific expertise and a strong background in leadership. As Chief of Naval Research for the past six years, he championed a number of educational and scientific outreach programs
