Retired Rear Admiral Jay Cohen announced as new DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology

Retired Rear Admiral Jay M. Cohen was sworn in on August 10 as the new DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology. Under Secretary Cohen brings to the Department vast scientific expertise and a strong background in leadership. As Chief of Naval Research for the past six years, he championed a number of educational and scientific outreach programs, including a scholarship initiative similar to the DHS Scholars & Fellows Program. He has expressed enthusiasm and support for the continued success of the Department’s program and network.
Under Secretary Cohen retired from the Navy following a distinguished 35-year career. In addition to his service at the Office of Naval Research, he commanded the U.S.S. Hyman G. Rickover and the U.S.S. L.Y. Spear, and his awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Cohen is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and holds advanced degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
